Course Title:  Health Sciences & Wellness 

Credit Hours: 1 Carnegie Unit (High School)

Placement in Curriculum:  Year-long (September 3, 2019 – May 14, 2020)

Pre- and Co-Requisites:   Successful completion of high school biology course

Course Description: This course is intended for homeschool children between grades 9-12. The objective of this course is to explore the concept that a positive, healthy and active lifestyle can enhance quality of life and understand how various health professions facilitate healthy living. Students will learn to develop awareness of their own control in the area of stress management, accept responsibility for the prevention of major health risks, demonstrate conflict resolution skills, and understand concepts of fitness and lifetime wellness. In addition, students will explore health promotion and disease prevention, from an individual and scientific perspective, as students gain the opportunity to investigate health sciences professions. 

Course Format: This course will be taught in an online using web-conferencing software (Canvas), meeting once weekly for 75 minutes per session. Students will be required to complete assigned readings and homework assignments independently outside of class. The expectation will be that for every hour of instruction, students will put in approximately 3-5 hours of independent study.

Course Description: This course is intended for homeschool children between grades 10-12. Exceptions may be made for advanced 9th grade students, with consent of instructor. Anatomy and physiology are complementary sciences that allow a student to study, classify, and understand body structures and functions. Therefore, the objective of this course is to introduce anatomy and physiology from an integrative perspective. Students will learn the structure and function of human tissues and glands, as well as each human body system. We investigate from the level of the cell to the level of the organism.

Students will be required to complete assigned readings and homework assignments independently outside of class. The expectation will be that for every hour of instruction, students will put in approximately 3-5 hours of independent study.
